NJ Certified Criminal Defense Attorney
The first Court you will appear in when you are charged with a crime in New Jersey is in the CJP Court in the County where the charge is filed. In Essex County, the CJP Court is on the 5th Floor of the Veterans Courthouse. There are several procedural steps that will be taken during this proceeding. Your attorney will appear with you and enter a Not Guilty plea, your bail will be reviewed, initial discovery (copies of the police reports) will be given to your lawyer, and the prosecutor will make an initial decision whether your case is going to proceed as charged or be downgraded.

Why You Need a Lawyer at the CJP Court Appearance
This appearance is the first opportunity your lawyer has to try to influence what will happen to your case. In many cases, a decision is made to downgrade the charge, with the case then either sent back to the Municipal Court or sent to the Remand Court. While representing his clients in the CJP Courts in Essex County, Union County, Passaic County and throughout the State, Howard Bailey has often been able to successfully convince the prosecutor to downgrade a crime to a DP offense; and, then convince the prosecutor to send it to the Court where Mr Bailey believes his client will have the best opportunity to get the charge dismissed or resolved to the lowest type of plea.
Defending a Client Charged With a Crime
If you are charged with a crime, you and your lawyer need to use every procedural step to try to minimize the State’s case against you. If successful, you can often downgrade a charge to a lesser offense, and minimize the potential sentence if you were ever convicted. If you are charged with a crime in New Jersey, call Howard Bailey at 973-982-1200 for a free consultation before you make any decisions about how to protect your rights and your freedom.
